The 85 mm guns first encountered on the T-34-85 two tiers previously are by now completely inadequate, even with APCR. The primary weakness of the T-44 is in its firepower. The T-44's turret is its best armored part, but while it does have the gun depression to utilize some hull down tactics, the armor is not nearly as reliable as the T-54, M26 Pershing or Type 59's, for example. The Safe Stowage perk is especially recommended, although a Wet Ammo Rack is not really necessary. Care must be taken to avoid exposing the ammo rack too much (located to the right of the driver), as it is quite vulnerable to damage. The armor, while unreliable against anything Tier 8 and above at best, can be very difficult for a Tier 6 and many Tier 7 medium tanks to break through when angled properly. With a maximum penetration of 190 mm with AP on any of its guns, it is almost impossible to penetrate many higher tier opponents from the front, and some may even give problems from the sides.

Its mobility is among the best of any Tier 8 medium tank, and is essential in making up for the otherwise poor firepower that it has. The T-44 is very much a flanking medium in the tradition of the T-43, and the later T-54. Poor gun dispersion values and shell velocities relative to its peers.Vulnerable ammo rack layout (next to the driver).Second worst penetration of all Tier 8 medium tanks with both the LB-1 and D-25-44.
